MARQUETTE — The Marquette Area Jaycees received three awards from Jaycee state headquarters for the 1989-90 year. The awards were: Chapter of the Year for Region 1; Julie Hale, President of the Year for Region 1; and a Presidential Medallion of Excellence for Hale from Lewis Legg, Michigan State Jaycee president. This year’s chapter officers have set a goal to achieve “Blue Chip” status, a program designed to help create a balanced chapter that concentrated on developing both the community and its members. Chapters that accomplish “Blue Chip” receive an award from Jaycee national headquarters.

MARQUETTE — Marquette’s fire department battled a blaze in the hobo “jungles” at Gaines’ Rock, east of the east end of Genesee St., for almost three hours early this morning. The blaze broke out at 1:45 a.m. and firemen remained at the scene until 4:22 a.m. On fire was a huge wood pile, which apparently had been ignited by some disgruntled teenagers. Firemen used a portable pump and laid 150 feet of one and one-half inch line in battling the blaze and thoroughly drenching the pile to extinguish the flames. One of the occupants of the area told firemen that some teenagers became angry when he refused to buy beer for them. They first set fire to one of their shacks, he said, but this was put out easily. Later, they started the wood pile on fire.
