MARQUETTE — Downwind Sports, Inc. at 514 N. Third St., owned by Nancy and Dennis Henderson of Marquette, has added a new department for technical rock climbers. It’s not the first expansion for the store, which opened in 1976 selling sewing kits for pre-cut winter clothing; and expanded in 1978 to include sailboards and accessories. In the early 80s, Downwind began carrying sea kayaks for open water paddling. Snowboards came next in 1986. “We like to introduce new people to new sports,” said Nancy Henderson. “We don’t carry any sporting goods we don’t know how to do.” Jim Goldberg, a Northern Michigan University junior who took second place in a recent NMU climb competition, will head up the new rock climbing department.
