MARQUETTE — Employees at Marquette Mountain ski hill are working to prevent further erosion that threatens the Carp River while watching the sky for rain. Warm weather has melted nearly all the hill’s snow, causing an estimated 50 tons of soil to erode, much of it into the river. The Marquette County Health Department, which issued the ski hill a permit to expand a ski run last year, has been monitoring the problem, said Al Budinger, chief of the department’s Environmental Health Division. “I don’t think there was any violation of the permit,” Budinger said today. ‘Sometimes even the best of designs simply don’t work. That’s not an excuse, but we have to look at the situation and try to anticipate what will happen.” More heavy equipment was brought in today and more water diversion devices, such as dikes and berms, are to be installed.
