MANISTIQUE — A Manistique man won first place in Michigan’s 1991 trout, salmon, and waterfowl stamp contest, sponsored by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Dietmar Krumrey took the first place prize for his painting of a brown trout. The artwork was selected from 38 trout and salmon paintings submitted by Michigan artists. Krumrey’s design will be used on trout and salmon stamps issued by the DNR. About 350,000 are expected to be sold to anglers in 1991. An avid hunter and angler, Krumrey has been painting professionally for 16 years. His list of honors includes winning the 1989 and 1981 Michigan waterfowl stamp contests, the 1984 and 1980 Michigan Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year competitions and the Michigan United Conservation Clubs Wildlife Artist of the Year contests. He was also honored as the national and state Ducks Unlimited sponsor artist for 1987.

MARQUETTE — Dog and cat owners in Marquette have been urged by Dr. Beatrice Bolan, city health officer, to have their pets immunized from rabies, which seems to be spreading from the heavily populated areas in Lower Michigan. Current Public Health Department bulletins indicate, according to Dr. Bolan, there has been a marked increase in wildlife and domestic animal rabies in the first quarter this year. IN the first quarter last year seven cases were confirmed, and to date this year 18 have been verified. Fourteen of the 1960 cases were reported in March. With the onset of spring weather, Dr. Bolan pointed out, domestic and wildlife species will be very active, increasing the possibility of transmission from wild life to domestic animals. Dr. Bolan recommended four steps to curb the disease: Rabies vaccination of dogs and cats; increased stray dog and cat control; keeping pets from running at large, and leaving wild animals, particularly skunks, in the woods.
