ISHPEMING — A proposed $500,000 National Guard Armory, which would be the largest to be constructed in Upper Michigan, came one step nearer to reality last night. The two-story brick building will be erected on the south side of U.S. 41 near Walnut Street. City Manager Thomas R. McNabb, members of the Ishpeming City Council, and a citizens’ committee appointed by Mayor Theodore Mattson approved the plans presented by Lt. Phillip White, job project officer, and Major Austin Lindberg, commanding officer of the 107th Engineer Battalion. White currently supervises construction of the Sault Ste. Marie Armory. General Ronald McDonald, adjutant general of Michigan, has predicted that the building will get underway in June or July.
