MARQUETTE — A ceiling light caught fire, damaging a local business Wednesday afternoon, said Marquette fire officials. Five firefighters responded with two trucks to a fire at Dan’s Formal Wear, 613 N. Third St., Marquette, at 4:10 p.m. and remained at the scene for about an hour. Officials said a fluorescent light burned out, causing the ceiling to catch fire in a room in the building. The structure suffered extensive smoke damage and minor heat damage. No estimate of damage was available, fire officials added. Persons in the building escaped without injury, said firefighters, who returned to the station at 5:05 p.m.

MARQUETTE — Included in an appropriation of $161,050, made available last week by the state administrative board for improvement of state parks, is $22,000 which will be spent on parks in the Upper Peninsula. The amount allotted for the Marquette state park on Bishop’s hill on M-28 is $5,200. In the majority of parks, improvement will be of an elementary nature, and in many cases they have been needed for several years. This is especially true of roads, wells, and sanitary conveniences. Several parks will have buildings erected to be used as headquarters and residence for the park officer, while a few new public service buildings will be placed in commission and may be sued as shelter in stormy weather. Other improvements will be of a general nature, such as clearing and grading to increase the amount of usable land in the various parks. Five million or more people will have visited the state parks this season, with practically every state in the union represented, if the consistent increase in attendance since 1925 can be depended upon, is the opinion of P. J. Hoffmaster, superintendent of the parks.
