MARQUETTE — Superior Tire and Auto, 112 W. Spring St., has sold its tire division to Pomp’s Tire Service Inc. of Green Bay. The Miracle Shield business, owned and operated by Ardi Payan, will continue to operate at its present location. Pomp’s will lease part of the building for its tire business. Lee Faulkner will continue as retail tire sales manager for Pomp’s. Pomp’s Tire Service Inc. was established in Green Bay in 1936. In addition to the new Marquette store, it has a total of 19 shops in Iron Mountain, Escanaba and Wisconsin and Minnesota. It sells and services Kelly, Michelin, Bridgestone, Yokohama and Cordovan tires.

MACKINAC — A total of 7,123 vehicles were transported across the Straits of Mackinac by the state ferries during the week ending July 28, setting a new high mark for the season with an income of $21,539, shown in a report submitted to the state highway department by Capt. G. E. Stufflebeam, superintendent. This exceeds the record of the previous week by 359 vehicles and $1,269.75. The previous high-income mark was established the week ending June 7 when $21,105.50 was collected. Of the vehicles crossing the Straits during the week ending July 28, 6,941 were passenger cars and the other 182 were trucks, busses, trailers and motorcycles. Records for the preceding week showed 6,564 cars, 200 miscellaneous vehicles, four horses and three wagons. During the last week in July 12,546 passengers crossed the Straits, 827 more than the previous week.
