MARQUETTE — A recent break-in at Bishop Baraga Central Grade School may be related to a similar incident at Fisher Elementary School reported earlier in the week, police said today. Bishop Baraga, at the corner of Fourth and Fisher streets, was broken into sometime between late Tuesday afternoon and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, said Marquette Police Capt. Sal Sarvello. A skylight at Fisher Elementary was broken to gain entry to that school sometime between Friday and Tuesday morning, but nothing was reported taken. In both incidents, it appeared the burglar was cut while entering because considerable blood was found inside both buildings, Sarvello said. Entry to Bishop Baraga was gained by breaking a north window. Several classrooms were broken into and a small amount of cash was taken from one, said Sarvello, adding that someone apparently “bled profusely” after breaking a window inside the building. Police are seeking help from the public identifying the perpetrators, who may show evidence of the injuries.

GRAND MARAIS — Two boys rescued a deer from the ice of Lake Superior. The deer had apparently been chased by wolves all day, and came into town for protection. Nearly exhausted, it made its way to the harbor and onto the ice. Weakened by the chase, the animal made little progress on the slippery ice. The boys picked their way out to the deer and carried it to shore.
