MARQUETTE — Four photographs by Scott Dupras, owner of Lemon’s Studio, 617 N. Third St., won awards at the recent Wisconsin Professional Photographers convention in Appleton, Wis. Only 3 percent of the 700 entries judged at the convention won national merit designations; two of Dupras’ photographs were awarded the honor. His photograph titled “A Cat’s Eye View” won an excellence award and a second award for outstanding artistic quality. His portrait of four Marquette Senior High School students, titled “Let’s Hear it for School Spirit,” also received an excellence award. Both photographs will be included in a national exhibit of professional photography scheduled for New Orleans, La., this summer. At the Wisconsin convention, Dupras won additional awards for his portraits of Michalene Williams and Sandy Rankinen.

MARQUETTE — Marquette’s fire department was called out three times over the weekend, but there was only one fire, since the other two calls were “still alarms.” At 4:45 yesterday afternoon firemen were summoned to the engine room of the unloading derrick of the Marquette Dock Co. at the foot of East Washington St. Firemen said a blaze broke out when some workers were thawing out pipes with a hand torch. Flames spread to some wood and celotex, but damage was slight as the materials were covered by sheet iron, which contained the flames. Firemen used a booster hose to extinguish the flames. At 8:01 Saturday night firemen received a phone call from a resident on Fisher Street, who said there was a blaze in the J.H. Green Co. yard. An investigation by firemen disclosed that the smoke was coming from an incinerator in the yard of a neighbor, near Green’s, on Grove St. The third call was sounded at 4:20 yesterday afternoon when the sprinkler alarm bell went off at Lord’s Outfitting Co. store, 309 S. Front St. Firemen said the sprinkler system had built up pressure, setting the alarm off, but that there was no fire.
