ISHPEMING–U.S. Rep. Bob Davis has jumped in the trenches with Ishpeming veterans denied permission to erect a monument to fallen comrades on post office property. Davis, R-Gaylord, plans to meet this week with the U.S. Postal Service’s congressional liaison to get permission to erect the 20-foot long black and white marble monument north of the Ishpeming post office at the intersection of Hematite Drive and Second Street. Ishpeming City Manager Helen St. Aubin began efforts to get the monument located there in November 1987, but after many delays was turned down in January by the Postal Service, which cited the “heavy burden” of red tape and costs involved in selling the land to the city. St. Aubin and the veterans voiced displeasure at their decision, saying the city didn’t want to buy the property, but only wanted a lease or easement. The monument bears images of servicemen from all branches of the military and the names of all Ishpeming area men who have died in war this century. It bears the slogan, “Most gave some, some gave all.”

NEGAUNEE–In a joint announcement made here today by Robert Q. Archibald and Warren Moore, it was revealed that North Range Mining Co, of Negaunee and the W. S. Moore Co. of Duluth have decided to exercise their joint option to take a lease on the Zenith Mine at Ely, Minn. Work will be started immediately to place the iron mine in operation. Because the property has been shut down since last summer, with all equipment except pumps removed, it will take some time to place the mine back in production with full crews, but preparations to do so will go forward as rapidly as possible. Zenith Mining Co. has ben formed by the two concerns and will be owned jointly by North Range and W.S. Moore. Zenith acquires the lease of the Ely property, and North Range has been appointed operating agent for Zenith. S. J. Haller, vice president of operations for North Range, will be in general charge of the Zenith company, with Richard L. Mitchell as superintendent and Hugh C. Clark underground superintendent. J.C. Kirkpatrick is general superintendent of all North Range operations.
