MARQUETTE — Plans are being finalized for the Cooperative Team Learning Workshop for area elementary teachers at Northern Michigan University’s Don H. Bottum Center. Cooperative learning is a class management plan that places children of differing reading abilities together to do teamwork in various areas of the regular school curriculum. The workshop program will include techniques for setting up heterogeneous cooperative team learning groups in classrooms. Materials will be available to help teachers use this topic for inter-disciplinary learning, involving social studies, science, reading, writing, and math. Project Director, Hope Dunne, worked with Myrtle Hutter, Whitman Elementary; Kay Reader, Skandia Elementary; Judy Sarosik, Ely Elementary; Iris Katers, Fisher Elementary; and Sandy Bonsall, Lakeview Elementary.

TRENARY — A new Trenary State Bank, which serves parts of both Alger and Delta Counties, will be opened Friday, Aug. 1, with an “open house” scheduled for the following day. The old bank structure, in use for nearly 35 years, has been donated to the Trenary Evangelical Lutheran Church. It will be moved and parking facilities installed on the site. The Trenary State Bank was started as a private institution in 1904, was changed to a state bank in 1935, and has been a part of the community’s economic life ever since. Since the cost of remodeling the old building was prohibitive, the board of directors decided to build a new bank this year. The modern structure will have all new furnishings and fixtures, and for the first time, 100 new safety deposit boxes will be available for Trenary area residents. John Knaus, who became assistant cashier in 1926, is vice president and cashier of the bank. The board of directors includes Vance Davis, William E. Smith, Lauri Olilla and John Knaus of Trenary, Jacob J. Harsila of Sundell, and Vincent Truden of Forest Lake.
