GWINN — A unique apartment complex is nearing completion in the Gwinn Area. Country Log Apartments on M-35 East will offer 25 2-bedroom units with several features, according to Mark McNabb of Gwinn, who is a partner in the venture with his father, Tom. The units each have five closets, a stove, refrigerator, plush carpeting, on-site laundry and plenty of parking. It’s location is convenient to Sawyer Air Force Base and the surrounding area. 24-hour maintenance service is available, should problems arise. The project cost more than $500,000, and is made entirely of logs. “Everything is high quality. It’s a chance to live in log housing without purchasing right away,” said McNabb.

CHAMPION — The women’s organizations of Champion, Michigamme, and Republic were hostesses at a party honoring Dr. Paul Van Riper on the occasion of his 83rd birthday in the gymnasium of the Champion School. Dr. Van Riper, who was Michigan’s Doctor of the Year in 1957, is still active in his practice and the only doctor serving the western end of Marquette County. Respected and loved by his community, he is always available when he is needed, will always be on time, and has never been known to send a bill.
