MARQUETTE — The $102,000 in federal aid project to improve commercial fishing in Lake Superior will seek new and expanded use for herring, smelt, chubs and other lake fishes, as well as explore ways to lengthen the lake fishing seasons and this increase fisheries income. The project calls for extension of fishing beyond current glut periods, improvements in methods of fish handling and storing aboard fishing boats, and an improvement to marketing and expansion of consumer use of herring and smelt products.
