MUNISING – Rangers from the Munising District of the Hiawatha National Forest are asking snowmobilers to stay off Hanley Field this winter. The local seasonal airport on H-13 in Wetmore is on Forest Service land and operated under a special use permit by the Alger County Board. The Michigan Aeronautic Commission this summer directed the board’s Airport Authority to take action to prevent snowmobilers from using the field, citing the possibility of a safety hazard. “Track cleats or other metal parts left on the (grass) runway in the spring represent a severe hazard to aircraft when landing or taking off,” Assistant Ranger Dick Anderson said.

MARQUETTE–A campus-wide effort to provide Sabin oral polio vaccine to all students, faculty, staff members and their families at Northern Michigan University will begin on Monday. The University Health Service today announced plans to administer the three types of vaccine at approximately five-week intervals. Dr. Osmo I. Niemi and the health service staff at NMU, urged everyone on campus to take advantage of this opportunity to help eliminate polio. The vaccine will be given in the University Health Center, located on the ground floor of the east wing of Walter Gries Hall. Type 1 will be given Nov. 4-8; type 3 on Dec. 9-13; and type 2 on Jan. 13-17. Doctors say it is wise to take the oral vaccine even if Salk vaccine has been taken previously. The ultimate goal of the entire program, Dr. Niemi said, is to make polio as scarce as typhoid is today.
