Fire hydrant in Marquette Township damaged in crash

MARQUETTE — A man was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs early today after being involved in a crash that damaged a fire hydrant in Marquette Township.
The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that it was dispatched to a single-vehicle crash on Wright Street near Forestville Road at about 6:05 a.m. today.
An investigation at the scene showed that a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by a 45-year-old man from Lansing, was southbound on Wright when the driver left the roadway to the right and stuck a hydrant.
Significant damage was caused to the front of the Malibu as well as the fire hydrant, the MCSO said. The damaged hydrant ruptured, causing water to spew.
The Marquette Department of Public Works was required to come to the scene and shut off water to residents in the area.The DPW is repairing the damaged hydrant.
The driver was transported from the scene by Marquette Township EMS to UP Health System-Marquette for treatment. He was subsequently arrested on a charge of OUID and lodged in the Marquette County Jail.
Deputies were assisted on the scene by the Marquette Police Department, Marquette Township EMS, Marquette Township Fire Department, Marquette Township Public Works and Marquette Detailing.
The investigation continues.
