Band concert to feature tuba solo
NEGAUNEE — A highlight of this week’s Negaunee City Band concert will be a tuba solo, “Beelzebub,” played by NMU student Chris Adams. The concert is scheduled at at 7:30 Wednesday evening at the Outdoor Performing Arts Center on the east end of Iron Street. Another special treat will be “Holiday for Trombones,” featuring the band’s trombone section and numerous friends.
The concert will open and close with marches by two of American’s “March Kings.” Sousa’s “Black Horse Troop” was dedicated to the mounted troops of a Cleveland National Guard unit, while Henry Fillmore’s “Our Own Red, White and Blue” was written as a contribution to the war effort during World War I, raising funds for the Red Cross. A classic of the band repertoire is R. Vaughan Williams’ “Folksong Suite,” which includes “Seventeen Come Sunday” and “Folk Songs from Somerset.” Another folk song piece is “Two Israeli Dances.”
Director Lucas Wickstrom has also programmed several contemporary pieces. “Beatles Gold” is a medley of early recordings, including “She Loves You” and “Twist and Shout.” “We’re All in This Together” is one of the hit songs from Disney’s “High School Musical,” filled with lots of rock energy. The concert will conclude with “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”
