NEWBERRY — The last charge at the Newberry furnace was on Tuesday and the furnace was banked at 2:30 p.m. beginning the shutdown of the pig iron and chemical part of the Newberry Lumber and Chemical Company of this place. The fires were not drawn and will be kept alive ready to start should circumstances warrant it. The retorts were stopped during last night but there will be enough liquor in the chemical department to keep going until the end of the week. With about two million feet of cut timber in the woods the camps are being closed this week but the crews will mostly be kept busy loading out for shipping to the plant.
