MARESA issues special ed notice

MARQUETTE — The Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency has issued the following notice of special education services via Article 3 of Public Act 451 of 1976, as amended. The Michigan Mandatory Special Education Act:

Requires that local school districts provide or contract for the delivery of special education programs and services to resident students with disabilities from birth to age 26 or until graduation with a high school diploma. Special education programs and services are also available to incarcerated youth who would be eligible to receive a free appropriate public education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Students with disabilities are eligible for services under the following categories: cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, hearing impairment, visual impairment, deaf-blindness, physical impairment, other health impairment, specific learning disabilities, severe multiple impairment, early childhood developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder, traumatic brain injured, and speech and language impairment.

Children, birth through age 3, may be eligible for Early On Services, which do not require special education eligibility, if they have a developmental delay or pre-established condition that has a high probability of resulting in a developmental delay. The pre-established conditions include conditions such as chromosomal abnormalities; genetic or congenital disorders; sensory impairments; inborn errors of metabolism; disorders reflecting disturbance of the development of the nervous system; congenital infections; severe attachment disorders; and disorders secondary to exposure to toxic substances, including fetal alcohol syndrome.

Referral of persons suspected of having a disability may be made by a parent or guardian or, with the consent of a parent or guardian, by appropriate professional personnel (including a licensed physician, registered nurse, social worker, or school personnel), to the local school principal or the Director of Special Education, Marquette Alger Regional Educational Service Agency, 321 East Ohio Street, Marquette, Michigan 49855.
