Woman rescued after fall at Hidden Beach

MARQUETTE — A 49-year-old Montana woman was rescued on Monday afternoon after a fall at Hidden Beach in Marquette Township.

Marquette Township Fire Chief Dan Shanahan said the fire department was dispatched to Hidden Beach on a report of a fall at around 1 p.m. Monday, and not knowing the situation, did not request assistance.

It was discovered the woman had taken a 25-foot fall, resulting in a rescue of about 300 feet.

Assistance then was received from the Chocolay Township Fire Department, Marquette County Rescue 131 and Special Ops.

After seeing the woman had a head injury, help was requested from Upper Peninsula Health System Advanced Life Support. Once the medic reached the patient and realized the terrain, it was decided it was better to take her from the scene by boat for more comfort and safety.

The Coast Guard was dispatched, but after learning that helicopter training was taking place in Escanaba, the woman was transported by helicopter to K.I. Sawyer and then to UPHS-Marquette.

The woman’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
