Dahm’s RBI single give Blues dramatic win in Wisconsin
RHINELANDER, Wis. — The Post 44 Blues American Legion baseball team based out of Marquette won its third straight game Saturday in dramatic fashion at the Rhinelander Rebel Invitational held in northern Wisconsin.
The Blues took a 6-5 walk-off victory over D.C. Everest Post 492 of Schofield, Wisconsin.
The Upper Peninsula team ended the game when Jaykob Dahm hit an RBI single to center field with the game tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Blues advanced to the tournament’s championship game on Sunday against Springs.
Post 44 also defeated Ironwood Post 5 12-7 on Saturday.
The Blues’ next games are a doubleheader also scheduled against Ironwood at 5 p.m. Friday.
Here are details from Rhinelander:
Marquette 6, D.C. Everest 5
The Blues’ third and final pitcher, Desmond Gleason, picked up the last-inning victory as he got the final two outs in the top of the seventh, allowing a hit without a run.
Teammate Alex Brennan started and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs — but just two earned — on eight hits and three walks as he struck out six. Roman Yuhas came on in the sixth for Brennan, getting the final out that inning and the first out of the seventh, allowing an unearned run on a hit and two walks as he fanned one.
Will Reimer took the loss for D.C. Everest, allowing two earned runs on two hits and a walk in two innings in relief of starter Ty Rohde.
The Blues scratched out just four hits, but took advantage of three D.C. Everest errors and seven walks. Easton Jezewski hit a double for the winners from the No. 9 spot in the batting lineup, also knocking in two runs and scoring once as he drew a walk.
Dahm with his game winner, Evan Brown and Cooper Sanville each had a single, while Wes Robinson collected an RBI, scored a run, was credited with a sacrifice and was walked once. Teammate Desmond Gleason drew two walks, too, while Sanville made two steals and Robinson one.
Rohde, Cole VanSlyke, Michael Schepp and Maddox Wyro each had two hits for D.C. Everest, which finished with 10 hits, though every one of them was a single.
An error brought home the Blues’ first run in the bottom of the opening inning, while a wild pitch made it 2-0 in the second.
Schepp tied the game 4-4 with a two-run single in the sixth, taking a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh on an error.
But Robinson’s sacrifice bunt scored a run to tie it in the bottom of the seventh before Dahm’s game-winning single.
Blues 12, Ironwood 7
Brown and Jezewski had big games in this Post 44 victory, Brown knocking in four runs with a double and single, while Jezewski collected three RBIs that included a two-run single.
That made a winner of the Blues starter, Sanville, who went 2 2/3 innings and allowed three runs — but just one earned — on two hits and seven walks as he K’d four.
Brown came on in the third and went 2 1/3 innings, allowing an earned run on two hits and no walks as he struck out two.
Aidan Mason finished off the final two innings, allowing three runs — again with just one earned — on no hits and a walk as he fanned three.
Ironwood’s Ian Mattila started and took the loss, going 1 1/3 innings and allowing seven earned runs on just two hits and four walks as he fanned one.
Brown and Sanville each had two hits, both of Sanville’s doubles, while Robinson drew two walks from the leadoff spot in the batting order. Brown also stole three bases with Sanville swiping one.
Huston King hit a double among Ironwood’s four hits.
Ironwood opened the scoring when Mattila hit into a double play to score a run, but Post 44 answered in the bottom of the first with five runs, the big blow Brown’s bases-loaded double that scored three.
Jezewski make it 7-1 in the second with a two-run single down the right field line, then went up 8-3 in the third after Robinson drew a bases-loaded walk.
The lead eventually grew to 11-3 before Ironwood scored four runs over the final three innings for a closer final score.
