Schoolcraft courthouse reopens after Wednesday damage

MANISTIQUE — The Manistique Public Safety Department responded to a report of malicious destruction of property Wednesday morning at the Schoolcraft County Courthouse, where a vehicle had driven onto the front lawn of the courthouse causing major damage to the grass, according to a press release from the department.

The suspect vehicle was a full size, white Chevrolet Silverado crew cab pickup truck. At 5 a.m., Manistique Public Safety officers were dispatched to the courthouse and discovered that the driver spun the vehicle in circles.

A sign was left on the property, suggesting that the suspect was upset with the Michigan Department of Human Services, which has offices in the courthouse building, the press release states.

There was no entry made or damage done to the courthouse building, police said. The officers contacted Schoolcraft County officials who decided to shut down the building on Wednesday but normal operations would proceed today, according to the press release.

No further information is being released at this time, officials said. The Manistique Public Safety Department is asking the public if they know of any information to contact the department at 906-341-2133 or 906-341-2134.
