MARQUETTE — Michigan State University Extension is providing their stress management programming via Zoom across the state for free.

Upper Peninsula MSU Extension Health employees Tracie Abram, Bree Carlson, and Anita Carter will be hosting programs on a bi-weekly basis for teens, adults, and seniors. The series being offered are RELAX and Stress Less with Mindfulness.

RELAX is a four-session series that helps identify emotional and physical cues and provides techniques to engage into a problem-solving response rather than the fight, flight, or freeze reactions we often fall into when stressors appear.

RELAX teaches the concept of Recognize, Empathize, Listen, Accept and X-Out the past as a problem-solving strategy. Relax starts May 11 and will meet from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Stress Less with Mindfulness is a five-session series that teaches the basics of mindfulness, which is to pay attention to the present moment, on purpose, without judgement. The five sessions are: Mindful Breath, Mindful Eating, Mindful Walking and Thought Surfing, Be Kind to Your Mind, and Mindful Laughter.

Mindfulness is a practice that improves attention, and focus, lessens anxiety, worry and pain. Stress Less with Mindfulness starts May 25 from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

To register for these online programs, go to the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at www.canr.msu.edu/ rlr/Events. The names of the series will be listed in the Events Management calendar. Scroll down and find the starting date of the series. Look for UP RELAX or UP Stress less with Mindfulness series.

Once registered, participants will receive the Zoom link to the classes and MSU Extension will email Resources for the course. Note that the summer series may not be activated in the system right away, so revisit the site if the series is not yet posted.

The MSU Extension’s U.P. Social-Emotional Health Teams goal is to continue offering these series ongoing through August. Every other Monday a series will begin. (Relax: June 8, July 6, Aug. 3, Stress Less with Mindfulness June 22, July 20, Aug. 17).

Email an MSU Extension health contact if there is a specific time, a specific audience, or if need assistance in registering for a class in registering for an online series or help with Zoom technology. These contacts are: Western U.P., Anita Carter at carte356@msu.edu; Central U.P., Bree Carlson at bree@msu.edu; and Eastern U.P. Tracie Abram at abram@msu.edu

Note that these social-emotional health classes are more beneficial if one attends the entire series. MSU Extension’s mission is to help people help themselves through educational programs and materials so the staff hopes to see people online soon.
