MARQUETTE — Have you thought about going snowshoeing this winter but haven’t made it out yet?

This weekend is the perfect chance to dust off those snowshoes. The fifth annual Thin Mint Snowshoe Shuffle is being put on Saturday by the Michigan Iron Industry Museum and the local Girl Scouts.

Attendees can expect an afternoon of snowshoeing, learning about local mining history, a chance to register to join Girls Scouts and a fun-filled afternoon. There will also be a museum scavenger hunt, participant patch and refreshments.

“Our great partnership with the Michigan Iron Industry Museum gives this event a fantastic venue with majestic snowshoe trails and an indoor warmup packed with local history,” said Les Bek, event coordinator for The Thin Mint Snowshoe Shuffle.

Participants are welcome to snowshoe at their own pace along the museum’s 1/3-mile Geology Trail or with a trail mentor. Snowshoers can enjoy the wooded views and the interpretive signs that illustrate the Carp River Forge.

“There are always some participants who are trying snowshoeing for the first time or who have never been to this museum, so their snowy smile of accomplishment before heading in to explore the museum is a very contagious smile,” Bek said.

Organizers said thanks to Wilderness Sports and Aspen Ridge School, there will be some snowshoes available in different sizes to borrow for those who don’t have their own pair. Or people may bring their own snowshoes.

Donations of $5 per person or $20 per families of four or more are appreciated and include a fun patch, organizers said.

According to Bek, the event’s “proceeds support our Family Partnership fund. This fund is available to assist any girl with membership, uniform, camp or program fees.”

The event happens from 2-4 p.m. and participants are invited to join at any time on Saturday. The Michigan Iron Industry Museum is located along Forge Road in Negaunee Township. For more information, contact Bek at lbek@gsnwgl.org
