Lake Superior Shore Run Saturday

MARQUETTE — The Lake Superior Shore Run is celebrating its 25th anniversary Saturday at Little Presque Isle along Marquette County Road 550.

The Superiorland Ski Club has been hosting the trail-based running event since 1994 as a fundraiser for its youth ski programs for ages 5-18.

Events include the 5-mile hike, which begins at 9 a.m., the half marathon, with starts at 9:30 and 10 a.m., the Eagle Mine 5K, which begins at 11 a.m., and the U.P. Health Plan 1K youth event at noon.

The half marathon is the featured event and combines steep climbs up Top of the World and Bareback Ridge, flat sections passing pristine Harlow Lake, and rugged shoreline from Wetmore Landing back to Little Presque Isle.

The Eagle Mine 5K starts at the same place, but using all the trails on the east side of County Road 550. A 5-mile hike was added three years ago to provide a non-competitive portion of the event.

The U.P. Health Plan 1K kids race is the final event of the day and is free to all kids up to age 13.

Race organizers are planning for a large crowd for the silver anniversary and are providing custom designed T-shirts to all pre-registered runners and a 25th anniversary gift of a large cloth grocery bag.

Registrations are being accepted until midnight Wednesday. Bag pick up and registration is available from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Friday at the Marquette Commons.

Late registrations are also accepted Saturday morning at the event site, although T-shirts are not guaranteed.
