Driver charged in pedestrian death

BARAGA — The Wisconsin resident who has been charged with the death of a Baraga man was released on $100,000 bond from Baraga County Jail on Monday, officials say, following his arraignment.

Christopher Leblanc, 29, was charged with driving while intoxicated and causing death, after his vehicle allegedly struck and killed 29-year-old Baraga resident Orlando Moreno on South Superior Avenue in Baraga early Saturday morning, Baraga County Prosecuting Attorney Joseph O’Leary said.

The Baraga Village Police responded to the scene with assistance from the Michigan State Police and Keweenaw Bay Tribal Police.

A probable cause conference in the case will take place in Baraga County District Court Tuesday, with a preliminary examination scheduled for July 2, O’Leary said.

An autopsy on the victim has been conducted, and the incident is still under investigation, O’Leary said.
