Redistricting forum Tuesday

MARQUETTE — A Marquette Area Redistricting Reform Town Hall put on by Voters Not Politicians, a nonpartisan ballot committee, is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

This will be a town hall discussion on the problems caused by gerrymandering and a proposed solution for Michigan voters to consider this fall.

It will take place at Marquette Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 1510 M-28, Marquette, which is located 2.7 miles east of the U.S. 41/M-28 junction in Harvey.

The intent is to inform voters about a proposed amendment to the Michigan State Constitution to reform the process for redrawing congressional and state legislative district boundaries.

Voters Not Politicians is looking to inform voters about a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would prevent politicians from manipulating voting district boundaries to secure their own hold on power by giving authority for drawing new voting districts after each U.S. Census to an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission, comprised of voters chosen through a randomized process.

Using all volunteer petition circulators, the organization collected more than 425,000 signatures in 110 days to place the proposal on the November state ballot, well in excess of the 315,654 minimum required by law. The group recently scored a major victory when the Michigan Court of Appeals unanimously ordered the State Board of Canvassers to place the initiative on the ballot following five months of delays after the signatures were submitted.
