Eagle Mine, Humboldt Mill tours

MARQUETTE — A series of public tours of Eagle Mine facilities will be offered this summer, with tour locations alternating between the Eagle Mine near Big Bay and the Humboldt Mill in Humboldt Township on Fridays from June to September.

The first tour will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at the Humboldt Mill. Tours of the mill will also be offered on the following dates from 10 a.m.-noon: July 20, Aug. 3, Aug. 17, Sept. 14 and Sept. 28.

The walking tour of the Humboldt Mill will follow ore from Eagle Mine through the circuit of crushing, grinding and flotation processes. Interested attendees should be prepared to spend one hour walking on site, including flights of stairs and walking over metal grating.

Tours of the Eagle Mine will be offered on the following dates from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: June 29, July 13, July 27, Aug. 10, Aug. 24, Sept. 7 and Sept. 21.

The tour of the Eagle Mine is primarily a driving surface tour of the mine site, but includes a walking tour of the water treatment plant. The tour does not go into the underground mine, but attendees will see where the ore is carried up from underground and where it is stored until it’s loaded onto haul trucks. Other surface facilities include the storage area for waste rock, the backfill plant and the truck repair shop. Eagle Mine tours depart from the Marquette Information Center at 153A W. Washington St. Bus transportation for the tour is provided.

Registration for the tours is required. The tour is free and open to people ages 13 and up. Attendees under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information or to register for a tour, call 906-273-1550.
