Lost motorist in Republic found

REPUBLIC — Police responded to a report of a lost motorist in distress around 3:35 p.m. Friday, according to a press release from Michigan State Police. The incident occured in the area Fence River Road, which runs east – west between M-95 and U.S. 41, near the Mansfield Location and Republic.

A Republic resident called the Marquette County Central Dispatch, advising her 69-year-old sister, who was traveling to Republic from Menominee had become lost, then got her vehicle stuck in a snowbank as a result of taking a wrong turn. The caller advised that her sister had left the vehicle when it ran out of gas and began to walk in an attempt to stay warm, as the temperatures were around 0 degrees Fahrenheit at the time.

Marquette County Central Dispatch and troopers were able to “ping” the lost woman’s cell phone in order to estimate her location. They eventually located the vehicle and found footprints in the snow, which were off the road, a long way away from the woman’s car.

After further searching, the woman was located around nine miles away from her vehicle. She was in the vehicle of a local mail delivery driver she had come across.

The woman, who said she had been walking since around 10 a.m., refused any medical treatment and was transported to her sister’s home in Republic.
