CHATHAM — Little kids on pedal tractors will be tearing up the turf Saturday in the Alger County Fair’s version of “tractormania,” fair organizers said. The new event is just one of several designed to put new zip into the annual livestock, vegetable, and handiwork show. Fair shows and events will have an added historical flavor this year in honor of the Michigan Sesquicentennial, said Fair board chairman Al Saberniak. The kids’ tractor pull, with prizes in four age divisions–4/5, 6/7, 8/9 and 10/11 begins at 1 p.m. The entry fee is $1 per child and tractors will be furnished.

MARQUETTE — Thousands have circled the island in cars, going back many times and never tiring of its beauty. But to take only the land route is to miss a great deal of Presque Isle’s majesty. It is like trying to fully appreciate an architecturally beautiful by examining it only from the inside. Scenic water tours of the island can now be made aboard the Karen Joan, a 32-foot cabin cruiser that can accommodate 14 persons. Owned and operated by Donald Kroken, Marquette, the Karen Joan makes four tours of the island daily at a reasonable charge.
