Brimley woman arrested on felony charges following traffic stop

Melissa Lyons

SAULT STE. MARIE — A 45-year-old Brimley woman has been arraigned on felony drug and obstruction charges following a traffic stop in which she allegedly resisted troopers and was found with suspected methamphetamine and open intoxicants.

On Thursday, at approximately 3:39 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police Sault Ste. Marie post stopped a vehicle for having defective equipment on M-221 near Depot Street in Brimley. During the traffic stop, the troopers contacted the vehicle’s occupants and observed evidence of open intoxicants in the vehicle, which allegedly belonged to the female passenger, police said.

When troopers investigated further, the woman began physically resisting the troopers. The troopers safely took her into custody, although one of the troopers suffered a minor injury while securing her.

The troopers’ further investigation resulted in locating open intoxicants and suspected methamphetamine in the vehicle which allegedly belonged to the female subject. It was also confirmed that the woman had a warrant for her arrest out of Chippewa County.

Melissa Lyons, 45, from Brimley, Michigan was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, resisting and obstructing a police officer, open intoxicants in a vehicle and the separate warrant for her arrest. Lyons was lodged in the Chippewa County Jail for the offenses, police said.

On Friday, Lyons was arraigned in the 91st District Court in Sault Ste. Marie on one count of possession of methamphetamine, one count of resisting and obstructing a police officer and one count of open intoxicants in a vehicle. She was given a personal recognizance bond with conditions. She is next due in court on Oct. 30.
