Local millwright highly ranked at apprenticeship competition
NEGAUNEE — Phillip Brubaker, a millwright with the Negaunee Carpenter and Millwrights Apprentice Training Center, placed second at the regional Level Best Apprenticeship Competition in Wayland.
The MRCCM competition featured regional winners from around the state, displaying their skills and highlighting the work that members of the union do on a daily basis.
“Our members build the structures that Michiganders use and enjoy everyday. Too often, the skill and labor that goes into these projects goes unseen and underappreciated,” said Tom Lutz, the executive secretary treasurer of the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, in a Tuesday press release. “This competition allows us to highlight the skills of our members, encourage those in the skilled trades to hone their skills and award our apprentices for their hard work.”
The Negaunee CMATC offers courses available to those in the Upper Peninsula who are interested in becoming carpenter and millwright apprentices. The programs each last four years and apprentices work for a union contractor and train throughout the year under the supervision of journey-level instructors and coordinators. Negaunee is one of five located in the state of Michigan.
