KEWEENAW COUNTY — Authorities in Keweenaw Country are investigating what appears to be an accidental fall from a waterfall that resulted in the death of a man Saturday. According to the Keweenaw Count Shriff’s department, the accident occurred shortly afternoon Saturday in Grant Township near Manganese Fall. The victime, whose name has not been released, is said, according to a press release to be in his 50s.

According to a Monday morning press release from the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 12:10 p.m. Saturday, deputies were dispatched to Manganese Falls in response to someone having fallen from the cliff. The man, whose name is not being released due to privacy for the grieving family, was walking along the path when he fell approximately 25 feet. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Deputy who was on scene as part of the investigation said the incident occurred at the top of the waterfall.

“He fell from an elevated area at the top of the falls to the first pool,’ said the deputy, who asked that his name not be disclosed. “They were in a spot that maybe wasn’t appropriate to be looking over the falls.”

The release states the fall does not appear to be suspicious, as the initial investigation suggests death was caused by an accidental fall.

The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s office thanked the responding agencies including the Copper Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, Keweenaw County Search and Rescue, Michigan State Parks and Recreation and the Calumet Township Fire Department.
