Bergman tops Barr in 1st Congressional District race

MARQUETTE — Republican incumbent Jack Bergman secured another two-year term as representative of the U.S. 1st Congressional District.

All results are, as of yet, unofficial.

As of 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Bergman topped Democratic challenger Callie Barr 278,457 votes to 178,825. Percentage-wise, he had 59.07% of the votes compared to Barr’s 37.94%. Bergman posted the following statement to his official Facebook account, accompanied by President-elect Donald Trump: “We did it, Michigan! The odds were stacked against us, the media was stacked against us, the pundits were stacked against us ….”

Following the usual trend for Marquette County, the Democratic candidate won the area with a total of 20,268 votes compared to Bergman’s 16,155.

Two other candidates ran for the same position. Working Class Party candidate Liz Hakola garnered 8,506 votes while Andrew Gale of the Libertarian Party received 5,603 votes, or 1.19%. Hakola received 589 votes from Marquette County. Gale got 385.
