Ishpeming city manager fired

CUGINI
ISHPEMING — At a Thursday special city council meeting, Ishpeming city Manager Craig Cugini was dismissed.
After deliberating for approximately a half hour in closed session, the council reconvened to make the announcement.
“I want to make this absolutely clear,” said Mayor Jason Chapman. “There will not be any outbursts. There will not be any reaction. You will be removed if there is any reaction from here on.”
In a unanimous vote, Cugini was terminated.
Council member Pat Scanlon, who made the motion, said, “This is by far the worst day I’ve had in all my terms on the city council.”
Chapman also announced that current Ishpeming finance director Grant Getschow will act as interim city manager until a replacement is found for Cugini.
Another motion was made that requires Scanlon, Chapman, attorney Caroline Bridges and Getschow to sit down and make an agreement to be presented at the July city council meeting.
Cugini was instructed to return his keys to the Ishpeming chief of police after the meeting concluded.
