MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University’s Beta Alpha Psi honors organization recently held a book swap station in Jamrich Hall to help diversify students’ bookshelves.

Beta Alpha Psi is a an accounting, finance and information systems club that holds professional networking events and performs a variety of community services.

Due to construction in the library’s space in Harden Hall — situated next to Jamrich — the library itself has been moved across campus to Gries Hall.

Beta Alpha Psi president Ashley Olesky said the group was looking for a way to bring the library back to a central place on campus.

Olesky got the idea for a “miniature library” where students can swap a book they have currently for a new book at the group’s library.

Vice President Emilia Morris said the stand was “really successful.”

“We did (the book swap) last week and we had like 50 swaps,” Morris said.

Leisure books, textbooks and informational texts were brought to and taken from the miniature library to the students’ delight.

Aside from service events, Beta Alpha Psi holds six professional development events per semester for the benefit of its members and other undergraduate and graduate students.

“It’s really good for reaching out to the professional community, getting them in here, networking with students (and) recruiting,” Olesky said. “A lot of people in our group leave (NMU) with jobs.”
