Big lottery winner in U.P.

ESCANABA — An Upper Peninsula woman won big in the Michigan Lottery in a Lucky for Life drawing on March 12.

Patricia Royer of Escanaba had won $200 a few months ago. Royer said she had been using those winnings to keep buying lottery tickets. The winning numbers in her drawing on March 12 were 03-13-24-36-44.

That drawing scored Royer $25,000 a year for life.

Royer said her first thought when she saw the money in her account was that she’d been hacked. But after she logged out and logged back it, the money was still there.

Royer, 65, opted to receive her winnings as a one-time lump sum of $390,000, rather than as an annuity of $25,000 a year for 20 years or for life, whichever is greater.

She said she plans to start a scholarship on behalf of a loved one who recently passed away, and put the rest in savings.

Lucky for Life costs $2 per play and can pay out up to $1,000 a day for life. Drawings take place seven days a week at 10:38 p.m. (michiganlottery.com).

About 97 cents of every dollar goes to the state to benefit Michigan public education.
