Marquette County sheriff warns of new phone scam

MARQUETTE — The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is warning about scam phone calls of people impersonating sheriff’s officers.

According to a Wednesday press release, the sheriff’s office has receieved complaints that people have been spoofing its phone number and posing as staff of the sheriff’s office.

One of the scammers is telling victims that their computer has been hacked and money needs to be sent to fix it. Another scam has someone posing as a now-retired sergeant and telling the victim there is a warrant for their arrest.

The police say to always use extreme caution in paying someone over the phone, especially if you recieve the call.

If you doubt the legitimacy of the person you are talking to, even if the caller ID is correct, look up the phone number independently and call the number to verify the person you are talking to.

Starting at $3.23/week.
