Fugitive sought in Chippewa County

Jesse Churchill

PICKFORD — A search was on Wednesday for a fugitive in Chippewa County.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office said on its Facebook page that Jesse J. Churchill, 36, of Sault Ste. Marie allegedly cut his tether on Sunday and is on the run.

Churchill has three open felony cases with Chippewa County courts involving the following charges:

≤ delivery of methamphetamine;

≤ conspiracy to deliver methamphetamine;

≤ resisting and obstructing police;

≤ delivery of suboxone; and

≤ conspiring to furnish contraband to prisoners.

“Due to the state of Michigan bond reform, judges are having a hard time keeping people like Mr. Churchill in jail with a cash bond,” the Facebook post reads. “So, Mr. Churchill was released on PR (personal recognizance).

“The only oversight the court put on Mr. Churchill was an electronic monitoring device (tether).”

There is an active felony warrant for Churchill for interfering with the tether device.

The CCSO said Churchill should not be approached if seen.

Anyone with information is asked to call the CCSO at 906-635-6355, 9-1-1 or submit a tip on the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office app.

Starting at $3.23/week.
