Minor injuries reported in Marquette County SUV crash

SANDS TOWNSHIP — A two-car crash at a busy intersection in Sands Township on Thursday resulted in minor injuries.

The accident occurred where M-553 meets County Road 480. Both parties, a 19-year-old Gwinn resident in a Silver Pontiac SUV and a 73-year-old Negaunee resident driving a Chevy SUV, were heading east.

Due to the high volume of vehicles in the area, both drivers pulled out at the same time, resulting in a crash in the middle of the intersection.

Both drivers said they did not see the other.

The Gwinn resident’s SUV impacted the Negaunee SUV’s passenger side with enough force to tip it onto the driver’s side. Employees from local businesses and fellow drivers worked together to assist the Negaunee driver out the rear hatch door of the vehicle.

The Negaunee resident reported nonlife-threatening injuries while the Gwinn resident was uninjured.

Assisting at the scene were Sands Township Fire Department, the Sands EMS, Upper Peninsula Health System-Marquette EMS and the Michigan State Police.
