State Farm agency teaches fire safety to Gwinn school

GWINN — The National Fire Protection Association and local State Farm agent Kara Applekamp have teamed up with Gilbert Elementary School to support both fire safety and to promote reading literacy.

Using kits, the campaign works to educate children about fire prevention while strengthening their reading, according to the Applekamp State Farm Agency, located at 2582 U.S. 41 West in Marquette Township.

The kits contain everything an educator needs to lead a lesson on the value of fire safety and prevention with Sparky the Fire Dog.

The kit includes the large format Educators Edition of the “Story of Sparky the Fire Dog,” complete with lesson plan, a 30-pack of books for students and the new Sparky the Fire Dog plush toy.

State Farm indicated that it is a strong supporter of education and realizes that funding cuts have impacted teachers from having enough books in their classrooms and the school libraries.
