Candidates forum set for Thursday

MARQUETTE — Three candidates hoping to represent the 109th district in the Michigan State House of Representatives will take part in a candidate’s forum at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Marquette Township Community Hall.

Democratic Party hopefuls Joe Boogren and Jenn Hill will participate in the event along with Republican Melody Wagner. All three candidates will be hoping to earn votes for the Aug. 2 primary, which will allow them to represent their party during November’s mid-term elections. The Nov. 8 election will decide who takes over from the term-limited Sara Cambensy. Republican candidate Ron Gray declined an invitation to participate in the forum.

Doors for the in-person audience open at 5:30.

The forum, hosted by the League of Women Voters, will feature a live audience and will also be livestreamed on YouTube by the Northern Michigan University audiovisual department.

Questions for the forum will be sent in advance and will be screened for appropriateness. Similar questions will be combined in an attempt to cover as many topics as possible. Candidates will each make a one-minute-long opening statement and will have two minutes to answer each question. At the end of the forum, each candidate will also have two minutes for a closing statement.

The League of Women Voters asks those attending the forum to take precautions regarding COVID-19. While masks and vaccinations are not required, they ask that unvaccinated individuals or those with compromised immunes systems wear a mask during the forum. If you have a recent exposure or are feeling ill, the League of Women voters asks that you stay home and watch the livestream online.

The League is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages active participation in government at all levels. The organization promotes civil discourse and asks the candidates to focus on their goals and not direct any personal attacks at other candidates.
