MARQUETTE — Ishpeming Ski Club chief of competition Gary Rasmussen described Tuesday’s 135th annual Ski Jumping Tournament this way: “It was the good, the bad and the ugly.”

The good was about the people.

“The community support for the tournament was outstanding,” Rasmussen said. “The Ishpeming Ski Club offers thanks to everyone who came out on a snowy, cold night to watch the tournament.

“And there were a lot of people who stepped up to help out,” he said. “Even some who are not in the Ishpeming Ski Club.”

Also good was getting one round of competition in after the bad and the ugly: the snow and the wind at Suicide Hill, which is located on the border of Ishpeming and Negaunee.

“It was difficult weather, which was obvious to anyone who came out,” said Rasmussen, who also is the Ishpeming Ski Club’s head ski jumping coach. “So what we had was a successful tournament cut short by the weather. We got a practice round in and then the first round, but we had to cancel the second round of jumping.”

The 22 ski jumpers who participated came from all over the country. The event is a stop on both the regional premier Five Hills Tournament and the U.S. Cup. Skiers came from Colorado, Utah, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
