2 snowmobilers die in separate accidents
MARQUETTE — Two men were killed in separate snowmobile crashes Friday.
A 33-year-old Ohio man was pronounced dead at the scene of a snowmobile crash in Au Train Township Friday night, the Alger County Sheriff’s Office reported.
A 911 call reporting the incident on Trail No. 8 near Forest Lake Road came in around 8:25 p.m. Friday, police said.
The investigation concluded that the victim was traveling eastbound on Trail No. 8 when he “failed to negotiate a curve,” Alger County Sheriff’s Office officials said in a news release. “The victim lost control of the snowmobile and was ultimately ejected into a tree. It was concluded that excessive speed was the only contributing factor for the accident.”
Alger County EMS, Alger County Rescue 21 and the Alger County Sheriff’s Office were the responding units.
No names are being released at this time, police said.
The other death was in Munising Township where a man died in a snowmobile accident on Friday, the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post reported.
Police said in a news release that troopers were called to the scene of a snowmobile crash on Trail 8 near Riley Road in Munising Township at about 12:30 p.m. Friday. The accident involved a snowmobile driven by a 23-year-old man from downstate Taylor.
Police said the driver was transported to Munising Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation revealed that the lone occupant was traveling with a group of snowmobilers when he failed to negotiate a curve. The snowmobile and driver left the trail and struck a tree.
Police indicated that speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, which is still under investigation.
Assisting MSP were the Alger County Sheriff’s Office, Alger County EMS, Alger County Rescue and Wilderness Towing.
