While the golfing’s good: Wildcat golfers to keep busy while weather will still feel like fall

MARQUETTE — Considering that the weather window can be quite short in the fall, the Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s golf teams are doing well to squeeze in four meets between Labor Day and mid-October this fall.

The Wildcats will resume their season the following spring — or it actually might be late winter with meets usually beginning in near-tropical climes.

But for the fall, these NMU teams open when the Northern women travel to Saginaw to play in the Cardinal Cup at the Saginaw Country Club on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 8-9

“We’re looking forward to getting started, and I know the team is eager to get back to work,” said Wildcats head coach Ben Johnson, who is entering his second season as head coach and third with the program, in an NMU Sports Information news release about the schedules. “We have some exciting young talent coming in this year, and we can’t wait to get started.”

While the women take the following week off, the men jump into action. On Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 15-16, those guys head to the Bulldog Fall Classic hosted by Ferris State at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids.

It’s the women going a week after that, Sept. 22-23 at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Wayne State at The Orchard Golf Club in Washington, just east of Pontiac.

The men change places one more week later, Sept. 29-30, when Wayne State again hosts the Motor City Shakedown, this time at TPC Michigan in Dearborn, next door to Detroit.

The Northern teams join together for their final two meets in the early half of October.

On Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 6-7, the Wildcats held due south for Lemont, Illinois, and the Flyer Fall Intercollegiate hosted by Lewis at the Cog Hill Golf and Country Club.

And the fall wraps up with what is considered the GLIAC preview event, the Panther Invitational hosted by Davenport on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11-12, in Augusta, located between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.

The men will play at Stoatin Brae Golf Club and the women at nearby Stonehedge North.

Both NMU teams improved on their second day of their respective GLIAC Championships event, also held at the same two courses in Augusta.

Each team played a limited spring schedule before the GLIACs due to stormy weather often when they tried to get on the course.

Both teams’ schedules are available on the NMU athletics website, nmuwildcats.com, and looking under their respective teams.
