MARQUETTE –A female corrections officer sustained injuries in an assault at the Marquette Branch Prison on Nov.22.

Shortly after 8 p.m., three officers were on the gallery of the maximum security unit and were letting prisoners out for showers when one of the inmates began to attack the officer in the head using a weapon, according to a Michigan Department of Corrections press release.

The two other officers present at the scene restrained the prisoner. Shortly after, the officer was taken to a hospital by ambulance and was later released.

The inmate was later transferred to a different maximum security facility. Michigan State Police were contacted to investigate.

In a press release, MDOC spokesman Chris Gautz said that the hope is that charges will result from the prosecutor in response to the attack.

The incident comes after two female staff members were assaulted at the facility in August.
