MPD: Search resumes for missing kayaker

MARQUETTE — The search for a missing kayaker on Lake Superior resumed Monday.

Brett Russell Harriman, a 40-year-old Marquette resident, has been missing since Wednesday. He reportedly entered Lake Superior with his kayak between 12:30 and 2 p.m. Wednesday near the pavilion at Presque Isle Park in Marquette.

Harriman’s capsized kayak was located a half-mile north of Partridge Island where it was recovered and returned to shore by law enforcement officials. Harriman is still unaccounted for as of Monday afternoon, police said.

The search for Harriman was partially suspended over the weekend, according to Marquette Police Department officials. While MPD and other agencies called off their resources, the U.S. Coast Guard continued to patrol the area where Harriman’s kayak was located, MPD Detective Capt. Greg Kinonen said Monday.

Kinonen said the search for Harriman has resumed, and that law enforcement officials are still looking to get more resources in place to boost search efforts.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office Marine Operations Unit, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Great Lakes Enforcement Unit, the Michigan State Police and the U.S. Coast Guard have all assisted in the search thus far.

If anyone has any information regarding Harriman’s whereabouts or other details, they are asked to contact the Marquette Police Department at 906-228-0400.
