2 dead after County Road 550 crash on Saturday

MARQUETTE — Two people are dead after a single-vehicle crash along Marquette County Road 550 in Marquette Township early Saturday morning.

At around 12:55 a.m., the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash, which occurred near Wetmore Landing.

Police said in a news release that the vehicle, a 2020 Tesla, was traveling southbound on County Road 550 when it began veering off the roadway to the right. The vehicle struck a power pole and continued a short distance before coming to rest in the tree line. The vehicle caught fire and became engulfed in flames. Two occupants, a male and female, were inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Names had not been released as of Journal press time Sunday night.

County Road 550 was closed for several hours while investigators reconstructed the scene.

Alcohol and excessive speed are both believed to be factors in the crash, police said.

The sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by Marquette Township Fire and EMS, Chocolay Township Fire and Rescue, UP Health Systems EMS, the Northern Michigan University Police Department and the Michigan State Police.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office and state police.
