Fatal fall at Pictured Rocks

NPS investigation

MARQUETTE — The National Park Service is investigating a fatality that occurred as a result of a fall along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Park rangers had responded to a report called in from a marine band radio of possibly a deceased individual at Chapel Beach around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the National Park Service.

Upon arrival at the scene, park rangers and Alger County paramedics confirmed that a 32-year-old woman from California was deceased as a result of a fall, a release from the National Park Service states.

Joe Hughes, chief ranger for the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, said the woman fell approximately 200 feet from a location between Grand Portal Point and Chapel Rock.

The National Park Service is currently investigating if the woman was alone or accompanied when the incident took place, Hughes said.

The woman’s name is not being released at this time, Hughes said this morning, as the National Park Service is still attempting to notify her next of kin.
