MARQUETTE — This week Lake Superior Theatre is celebrating its 20th anniversary of operation with a four-part series called “Superior Adventures” — four unique presentations of Lake Superior history and culture.

The first event in the series took place Tuesday evening with the story and photo show “Shipwrecks, Sunburns and Snowstorms.” Presented by photographer Jack Deo and meteorologist and local author Karl Bohnak, the show featured images and stories of some of the most memorable weather events in the Upper Peninsula’s recorded history.

“A lot of our pictures were taken right where we’re at tonight,” Deo said, noting the location of the Lake Superior Theatre, sandwiched between Lakeshore Boulevard and Marquette’s Lower Harbor.

“All the sailing ships and the shipwrecks happened right in this vicinity,” he said. “To share that history with people that might not have known is a bonus.”

Deo and Bohnak used 250 images to illustrate stories of weather extremes in the U.P. The crowd was dazzled by tales and depictions of shipwrecks, snowstorms, antiquated snowmobiles, and by scenes of hardship and chaos caused by the forces of nature.

“As we recount what happened way back when, maybe (the audience) can get an appreciation for all the modern conveniences we have right now,” Bohnak said.

This collaborative slideshow was the basis for Bohnak’s book “Sunburns to Snowstorms: Upper Michigan Weather in Pictures & Stories.” Deo contributed the images and Bohnak’s wife, Elizabeth Yelland, provided illustrations for the project. The book is available for purchase at Michigan Made, Snow Bound Books and Touch of Finland in Marquette, and online at Amazon.com.

The next event in the “Superior Adventures” series takes place tonight with a presentation called “Shanties and Sea Songs” with licensed Capt. Orion Couling. The event will be an interactive sea-song sing-along and maritime musical history lesson.

On Thursday, Deo returns with the slideshow presentation “Deer Camps to Grand Camps,” featuring historical images from his 40-year collection of regional classic deer camps and grand log structures of some of the area’s most influential residents.

The series closes on Friday with a family fun event called “Tales of the Northwoods.” Veteran storytellers Jim and Mary Couling — who host Twilight Walking Tours — join their son Orion, from the “Shanties and Sea Songs” presentation, to recount their favorite stories of the U.P., featuring folk music and history.

All presentations are at 7:30 p.m. at the theater.
