1 dead in 2-vehicle accident in Ishpeming

ISHPEMING — One person is dead following a two-vehicle accident that took place shortly before 2:30 p.m. Monday on U.S. 41 at the intersection of Malton Road in Ishpeming.

Ishpeming police said a 64-year-old Marquette man was driving a white 2018 Lincoln Navigator westbound on U.S. 41 while approaching the intersection. A driver traveling northbound in a tan 2005 Buick LeSabre failed to yield the right of way while attempting to cross U.S. 41 and into a parking lot, pulling directly into the path of the Navigator.

The LeSabre was driven by an 85-year-old Champion man.

The driver of the Navigator could not avoid the collision, and the Navigator struck the LeSabre on the passenger side. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Upon arriving, officers found two injured people at the scene. One driver was transported to U.P. Health System-Marquette for non-life-threatening injuries while another person died at the scene. Names were not released as of press time.

The Ishpeming Police Department was assisted by the Ishpeming Fire Department, EMS, Michigan State Police, the Negaunee Police Department and Marquette County Rescue Unit 131.
